Dr. Sheila Edwards Lange has served as Chancellor of the University of Washington Tacoma since September 2021, providing leadership across all campus operations. A seasoned higher education administrator, she is a nationally recognized advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Prior to UW Tacoma, Dr. Lange was President of Seattle Central College, where she expanded equity initiatives, strengthened community partnerships, enhanced student support services, and helped establish the Seattle Promise program, which provides two years of free tuition to Seattle Public Schools graduates. She previously served as UW Seattle’s Vice President and Vice Provost for Minority Affairs & Diversity, leading the university’s first Diversity Blueprint and integrating equity goals into institutional strategic planning.
Dr. Lange serves on several civic and educational boards, including Pugh Capital Management, the Seattle Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, Washington Campus Compact, AAA Washington, and the Seattle Art Museum. Her honors include the Washington State Association of College Trustees’ 2020 CEO of the Year and multiple leadership awards.
A first-generation college graduate from Pachuta, Mississippi, Dr. Lange earned her bachelor’s degree from UC Irvine and holds a doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Washington.
