Preparing students for success in music and life

We serve middle and high-school students from across South King County—primarily students of color from Renton, Kent, Auburn, White Center, Rainier Beach, Des Moines, and Federal Way. Since 2017, we have provided instruction to hundreds of students, 91% of whom have continued with the program year after year. With essential support from our donors, we are proud to provide scholarship assistance to over 90% of our students, ensuring that high-quality violin and viola instruction is accessible to anyone who wishes to learn.

Key to Change gives students the chance to develop their sound while gaining important skills, such as discipline, preparation and self-awareness. We give young artists a place to belong and support one another, fostering leadership, community and meaningful relationships. At a time when music instruction in public schools is severely under-resourced, equitable access to these kinds of learning experiences is critically important.

Founder Dr. Quinton Morris

Dr. Quinton Morris is a concert violinist, educator, entrepreneur, radio host and filmmaker. A Renton native, he founded Key to Change to give back to the community that raised him.

Growing up in a single-parent household, Dr. Morris  was the only Black student in his high school orchestra and he had to take three buses to get to his violin lessons. He experienced firsthand the financial and cultural barriers that many students in South King County face when studying classical music.

Over the course of his 25-year career, Dr. Morris has performed and presented masterclasses, lectures and films at some of the world’s most respected venues.
