A Summer of Discovery at Harvard

Three students are spending the summer challenging themselves academically, exploring new ideas, and discovering new possibilities at Harvard University.

For most high school students, summer offers a chance to relax before another school year begins. For three Key to Change students, however, this summer has become an opportunity to challenge themselves academically while living and learning on the campus of one of the world’s most prestigious universities.

Chris Ramirez-Eligio, Justice Johnson, and Avi Spillers are currently participating in the Harvard Secondary School Program, where they are studying alongside students from around the world. Through rigorous coursework, campus life, and conversations with peers from diverse backgrounds, they are discovering new interests while preparing themselves for future college success. Although their experience is still underway, each student has already shared how Harvard is shaping their summer.

For Chris Ramirez-Eligio, the experience has been both inspiring and eye opening. “It’s been an amazing experience. Sometimes it doesn’t even feel real because Harvard is such a historic place. I’ve learned so much about myself and about others. It’s been unlike any advanced high school program I’ve experienced.”

Justice Johnson has discovered a growing interest in politics while strengthening his academic writing. “I’ve had a great time. I’ve discovered a real interest in politics, and I’ve definitely seen my writing skills improve. This experience has challenged me in the best possible way.”

For Avi Spillers, Harvard has provided an environment where academic exploration and artistic creativity naturally complement one another. “I’m having a great time. I’ve learned so much that it’s impossible to list everything. My classes are going really well, especially psychology, and I’ve been spending a lot of time working on research papers. I’ve also written a piece for one of my roommates who plays the flute, and we’re rehearsing it together while I play piano.”

Experiences like these reflect one of Key to Change’s core beliefs: when talented young people are given access to extraordinary opportunities, they grow not only as musicians but also as scholars, leaders, and citizens.

As Chris, Justice, and Avi continue their studies in Cambridge, we look forward to following their journey and sharing more about what they learn, accomplish, and bring back to Key to Change. We look forward to sharing more about their Harvard experience as the program continues.
