Key to Change viola student, Tyree Carr III, wins Concerto Competition
Tyree Carr III, a 15-year-old violist from Seattle, has been selected as the winner of the Key to Change Concerto Competition and will perform as a soloist with the University of Washington Philharmonia Campus Orchestra on May 30 at Meany Hall for the Performing Arts.
As part of Key to Change’s partnership with the University of Washington School of Music, the competition winner is invited to perform with the UW Philharmonia. Tyree was selected as this year’s winner by Dr. David Rahbee, Director of Orchestral Activities and Chair of Orchestral Conducting at the University of Washington School of Music. After hearing performances from four student finalists, Dr. Rahbee selected Tyree to receive first prize.
“Tyree gave a very mature, and thoughtful musical performance with a big sound and beautiful phrasing“, said Dr. Rahbee. “We are very much looking forward to continuing our partnership with Key to Change and welcoming him to campus to perform with the Campus Philharmonia Orchestra.”
During the concert, Tyree will perform the third and fourth movements of Telemann’s Viola Concerto in G major.
Tyree is currently a sophomore at Garfield High School in Seattle and is quickly establishing himself as a rising young violist. In February, he performed in a public masterclass taught by internationally acclaimed violinist Hilary Hahn during her residency at Key to Change.
Later this month, Tyree will also compete in the Solo String Festival and will appear as a featured soloist with the Federal Way Symphony at Key to Change’s Spring Salon Community Concert.
Tyree studies viola with Mara Gearman, assistant principal violist of the Seattle Symphony, and Dr. Quinton Morris at Key to Change. Key to Change is a nonprofit violin and viola studio with locations in Federal Way and Renton where middle and high school students receive world class music instruction from Dr. Morris and an outstanding faculty of professional musicians.
